Vikings win SWOSSAA tennis title
The Northern Vikings won the team title in the open division with 17 points at the SWOSSAA tennis championship Tuesday at the Sarnia Riding Club and Sarnia Tennis Club.
Lambton Central was second with 13 and St. Patrick’s tied for third with eight.
Chris Latosinsky of St. Patrick’s beat Northern’s Aditya Damani in the open boys’ singles final, and Mihnea Balan of Northern was fourth.
Divyesh Bhargava and Divija Bhargava of Northern won open mixed doubles.
Elijah Brown and Francesco Campo beat Alex Odekerken and Mario Compte Socas in an all-Lambton Central open boys’ doubles final, and Northern’s Ryan Davies and Kento Berry were third.
Alexa Tortola of Windsor Holy Names won open girls’ singles.
In the high school division, Ethan Jones and Chandler Haagsma of Northern lost the boys doubles’ final to Luka Gajic and Jagroop Bhangoo of Tecumseh Vista. Northern’s Aidan James and Sebastian Frenette were fourth.
Vista won the team title with 20 points and Ursuline was second with 15.
All finalists qualify for the OFSAA championship June 3-5 in Toronto.
Other high school division winners were: Ursuline’s Simon Brecka, boys’ singles; Wallaceburg’s Racquel Martin, girls’ singles; Windsor St. Cecile’s Eesha Atikukke and Eunice Chu, girls’ doubles; and Tecumseh Vista’s Peter Spanovic and Kaylin Robertson, mixed doubles.
Lions eye OCAA playoffs
The Lambton Lions will make the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer playoffs with a win in Wednesday’s regular-season finale.
They’ll host the St. Clair Saints at 5 p.m. at Lambton College.
The Lions (2-5-1) are vying with the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-5-1) and Niagara Knights (2-6-0) for the final two playoff spots in the West Division. All three teams are in action Wednesday.
If the Lions lose, they can still make the playoffs but they’ll need help. The Lions received help earlier this season when they were awarded a 1-0 forfeit win over Conestoga for a game they originally lost.
On Tuesday, the Lions women’s soccer team ended its 0-8-1 season with an 8-0 loss to the visiting Saints.
Lambton swept in twinbill
The Lambton Lions ended their winless debut season in OCAA baseball Tuesday by losing 7-1 and 4-1 to the St. Clair Saints at Errol Russell Park.
The Lions were held to three hits in Game 1 and two hits in Game 2.
The Lions finished in last place with a 0-17 record.
First-place Lancers win
The Lambton Central Lancers beat the visiting McGregor Panthers 34-22 in LKSSAA Tier 2 senior girls’ basketball Tuesday.
Lambton Central (3-1) took sole possession of first place and dropped Lambton-Kent (2-1) to second.
McGregor beat Lambton Central 31-25 in the junior game.
In junior boys’ football, Lambton Central (1-2) lost to first-place Ursuline 54-13 in Chatham.
