First-place Flags double Canadiens

Greg Hay scored twice and Jake Wilkins made 34 saves in the Mooretown Flags’ 6-3 win over the Lakeshore Canadiens on Wednesday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.

The Flags scored three unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes against the previously unbeaten Canadiens in front of 164 fans at the Mooretown Sports Complex.

Brody Genyn scored the winner at 10:35 to break a 3-3 tie, Brodie Conlon followed at 13:29 and Nolan Farr added an empty-netter.

Cameron Rannie also scored for the first-place Flags (6-0-0-0).

Blake Bain scored two goals for the Canadiens (4-1-0-0), Tycen Chittle added one and Nolan Hakr made 37 saves.

The Flags will host the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Vikings capture North tennis title

The Northern Vikings won two division titles and clinched first place overall at the rain-delayed LKSSAA North Region tennis tournament Monday.

Ethan Jones and Chandler Haagsma beat Aidan James and Sebastian Frenette 8-3 in an all-Northern boys’ doubles final. Cole Hudson and Hudson Land of Lambton Central were third, and Adam Cornelis and Kylar Vanderbeek of North Lambton were fourth.

Northern’s Adam Osler and Erin Lacey beat Lambton Central’s Ethan Goss and Emma Pachet 8-6 in the mixed doubles final. Bennett McKee and Madelyn Pineau of Northern were third, and Gavin Yap and Piper Elliott of Great Lakes were fourth.

Blake Brand of Great Lakes beat Luca Pasqualucci of St. Patrick’s 8-3 in the boys’ singles final.

Anna Esztegar defeated Sophia Watson 8-3 in an all-St. Francois-Xavier girls’ singles final.

Tessa Jackson and Ella Jackson beat Josie Jackson and Marley Jackson 8-4 in all-Lambton Central girls’ doubles final.

Third and fourth place in boys’ singles, girls’ singles and girls’ doubles will be determined this week after those matches were rained out Monday.

The LKSSAA championship will be Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Chatham.

Winless Lions shut out by Falcons

The Lambton Lions remain winless in their debut season after losing to the Fanshawe Falcons 5-0 in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association baseball league Wednesday in London.

The Lions (0-8) were held to two hits and made three errors.

Lions starter Jake Taylor gave up four runs – three earned – on four hits and six walks in 4.2 innings.

Lambton will host George Brown at 1 p.m. Saturday at Errol Russell Park.

Also Wednesday, the winless Lions lost to the unbeaten Falcons 11-0 in women’s soccer in London.

On Tuesday, the Lions-Falcons men’s soccer game was postponed by rain and moved to Monday, Oct. 7, in London.

Irish blank Lancers in second half

The St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish beat the Lambton Central Lancers 23-7 in LKSSAA junior football Wednesday at Lambton Central.

The Irish (1-0) led 9-7 at halftime.

Brandon Faulds scored on a kickoff return for the Lancers (1-1) and Mario Compte Socas kicked the extra point.

Wallaceburg beat Chatham-Kent 30-6 in the other game.
