Thirteen Sarnia-area wrestlers won their divisions at the Sarnia Invitational tournament at St. Patrick’s Saturday.

The meet drew more than 400 wrestlers and the last four OFSAA team champions.

Northern’s Liam Burns (38 kg) and Saint-Francois-Xavier’s Mathys Carrier-Moreaut (83 kg) won their novice boys’ divisions.

Great Lakes’ Katie Brooks (57.5 kg), Sage Madere (64 kg), Kaitlyn Schleihauf (77 kg) and Taylor Chadd (95 kg), North Lambton’s Emma Smith (51 kg) and St. Patrick’s Alexandra Campbell (61 kg) won novice girls’ divisions.

Duke Butler (51 kg) of Great Lakes and Leo Docherty (61 kg) of St. Patrick’s won open boys’ divisions.

Rylee Brough-Millier (47.5 kg) and Breanna Trudgeon (57.5 kg) of Great Lakes and Gracie Johnson (54 kg) of St. Patrick’s won open girls’ divisions.

Great Lakes was first out of 28 teams in the open girls’ division and St. Patrick’s was third.

Great Lakes also won the novice girls’ division, Lambton Central was third and St. Patrick’s fourth.

St. Patrick’s was second in the open boys’ division and Great Lakes was fifth.

Lambton Central was fourth and St. Patrick’s fifth in the novice boys’ division.

Vikings, Lancers set for showdown

The Northern Vikings (6-1) host the Ursuline Lancers (6-0) in a first-place showdown at 7 p.m. Thursday in the LKSSAA senior boys AAA basketball league.

St. Patrick’s (2-5) hosts Chatham-Kent (3-4) in the other AAA game, while Lambton Central (0-6) visits Wallaceburg (1-6) in the AA league.

On Tuesday, Jack Vozza and Parker Wyant were Northern’s defensive players of the game in an 85-46 win over Chatham-Kent.

St. Patrick’s lost to Ursuline 73-28, while AA-leading Great Lakes (5-1) won 42-16 over Wallaceburg.

In junior action, Great Lakes beat Wallaceburg 56-48, Northern clipped Chatham-Kent 85-58 and St. Patrick’s defeated Ursuline 72-61.

Chevaliers win with balanced attack

Four players – Jason Curts, Daniel Heath, Jagger Guenette and Owen Leroy – scored eight points apiece in the Saint-Francois-Xavier Chevaliers’ 43-41 win over the Ridgetown Royals in LKSSAA senior boys A basketball Monday.

North Lambton lost to Blenheim 42-38, McGregor beat Pain Court 76-19 and Chatham Christian topped Tilbury 57-26.

The regular season resumes Monday, Feb. 5, after the exam break with McGregor (6-0) and St. FX (5-0) in the top two spots. Next are Chatham Christian (4-2), Blenheim (2-3), Pain Court (2-4), Ridgetown (2-4), North Lambton (1-5) and Tilbury (1-5).

In the junior league, Carter Bressette scored 10 in North Lambton’s 34-31 loss to Lambton-Kent.

Chatham Christian beat Tilbury 80-19 and McGregor clipped Pain Court 60-37.

Reitknecht leads first-place Eagles

Connor Reitknecht scored twice in the North Lambton Eagles’ 4-3 win over the St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish in LKSSAA boys’ hockey Tuesday.

Ryan Bork and Trevor Vandenberk also scored for the North Division-leading Eagles (5-0-1).

Casey Shaten, Luke Laevens and Casey Guerette replied for the Irish (2-3-1).

In the girls’ league, Great Lakes lost to Wallaceburg 3-0.

Lions’ Thorup wins athlete of the week

Basketball player Jack Thorup is a Lambton Lions student-athlete of the week.

The second-year wing from St. Marys averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in two losses. He scored a career-high 14 on five-of-six shooting in Saturday’s 99-90 loss at Sheridan.

The Lions’ other weekly award went to the entire women’s basketball team, which improved to 9-2 with two lopsided wins. They beat Fanshawe by 32 points, then downed Sheridan by 45.

The Lions host the Mohawk Mountaineers Friday. The women tip off at 6 p.m. and the men follow at 8 p.m.
