Braydon Segeren of the Ursuline Lancers won a gold medal at the OFSAA wrestling championship in Ottawa this week.

Segeren, who won the boys’ 64-kg division at the two-day meet, is the first gold medallist from Chatham-Kent in at least 40 years, Lancers coach Chris Parent said.

Teammate Riley Crummer also reached the podium with a fifth-place finish in the boys’ 57.5-kg division.

Ursuline tied for sixth place in the boys’ team standings.

Wesley Crummer, Alyssa Crummer and Morgan Kormendy of the Lancers also qualified for OFSAA.

Royals curlers going to OFSAA

The Ridgetown Royals have qualified for the OFSAA boys’ curling championship March 22-25 in North Bay.

The Royals lost to the St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish 12-3 in the SWOSSAA final Wednesday at the Golden Acres Curling Club in Blenheim, but SWOSSAA is sending both finalists to OFSAA.

Ridgetown beat Leamington 7-6 and St. Patrick’s defeated Windsor Holy Names 8-7 in the semifinals.

In the girls’ final, Northern beat St. Patrick’s 7-4. Northern defeated Wallaceburg 13-1 and St. Patrick’s beat Tecumseh L’Essor 11-5 in the semifinals.

Blades lose opener in second OT

Logan Gardner scored 50 seconds into the second overtime as the Mooretown Flags beat the Blenheim Blades 4-3 in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division quarter-finals Thursday.

The Blades will try to draw even in Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Mooretown.

Tate Bowden scored twice, Ian Campbell had one and Jake Vancoillie made 52 saves for the fourth-seeded Blades in Game 1 before 327 at Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Gardner had two goals for the fifth-seeded Flags, Tristen Konrad and Brody Genyn also scored and John Chartrand made 57 saves.

Game 3 is at 7 p.m. Sunday in Blenheim. Game 4 will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mooretown.

Sharks lead 2-0 in first-round series

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks own a 2-0 series lead over the Amherstburg Admirals in their PJHL Stobbs Division quarter-final going into Game 3 at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Wheatley.

Jak Thiessen scored two goals, including the winner, in the 5-2 Game 2 win Thursday in Amherstburg.

Matt Carvalho, Braedon Caetano and Kristian Pelling also scored for the third-seeded Sharks and Ethan Handley made 42 saves.

On Wednesday, Carvalho scored twice and Handley had a 33-save shutout in a 7-0 win in Game 1 before a crowd of 289 at Wheatley Area Arena. Thiessen, Caetano, Pelling, Sylvain Lessard and Devin St. Pierre also scored.

Game 4 will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in Amherstburg.

Kings trail series to Canadiens

The seventh-seeded Dresden Kings will visit the second-seeded Lakeshore Canadiens at 5:30 p.m. Sunday for Game 4 in their PJHL Stobbs Division quarter-final.

The Kings trailed the series 2-0 going into Game 3 Friday night in Dresden.

Adam Enwright scored and Ty Golden made 59 saves in the Kings’ 6-1 loss in Wednesday’s Game 2 at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.

Thunderhawks need comeback

The eighth-seeded Wallaceburg Thunderhawks will visit the top-seeded Essex 73’s at 3 p.m. Saturday for Game 4 in their PJHL Stobbs Division quarter-final.

The Thunderhawks trailed the series 2-0 going into Friday night’s Game 3 at Walpole Island.

Mitch Rawlings made 31 saves for the Thunderhawks in an 8-4 loss in Game 2 Wednesday before 124 at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena. Josh Remsik, Connor Debot, Cohen Veenstra and Logan Dobransky scored.

Ex-Outlaw Fryer OUA all-star

Former Chatham Outlaws goalie Erica Fryer of the Toronto Varsity Blues is an OUA women’s hockey second-team all-star.

The Amherstburg native ranked second in the OUA regular season with a 1.39 goals-against average and third with a .936 save percentage while posting a 10-2-1 record.

This is her third consecutive all-star honour.
