“There hasn’t been a decision whether they’re going to cancel it or not, but I highly doubt that there will be lacrosse, I’m going to guess with the recent lockdown,” Dawson said. “We usually start the first of April. By the time May rolls around, I don’t think that they’re going to play this year.”

Ontario’s current stay-at-home order has been extended to May 20. The league’s regular season is typically past its midpoint by that date.

Being an indoor sport makes cancellation more likely because COVID-19 spreads much more easily indoors than outdoors.

“If it was outdoor, it might have a better chance,” Dawson said.

MacKinnon on all-academic team

Hartford Hawks senior golfer Brooke MacKinnon of Chatham has been named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference all-academic team for the third time.

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School graduate is a biology major with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

She’s averaging 79.25 strokes per round, which is the team’s second-best mark.

MacKinnon will begin the MAAC women’s championship Friday in Orlando.

She’s coming off her first career NCAA win last Sunday at the Hartford/Gillette Invitational. She has three top-10 results this season.

Ladd laments loss of OHL season

Windsor Spitfires defenceman Grayson Ladd of Kent Bridge is among the many OHL players disappointed this season was cancelled.

The Ontario Hockey League officially called off the long-delayed season Tuesday because the province’s worsening COVID-19 situation meant its return-to-play plan couldn’t receive final approval.

Canada’s two other major junior leagues – the Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – have played shortened seasons.

“It’s obviously very frustrating,” Ladd said to the Windsor Star. “The W(HL) and the Q(MJHL) being allowed to play, I think the OHL had a chance to start up, second-guessed it and when the third wave hit, guys realized it wasn’t going to happen.”

Ladd had 18 points in 53 games with the Spitfires in 2019-20. He has 42 points in 153 games in three seasons.

He’ll be an overager in 2021-22.
