Nicholas scores try in Canada’s loss

Captain Breanne Nicholas of Blenheim scored one try as the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team went 0-2 on the opening day of the Emirates Dubai 7s on Friday.

After a 52-0 loss to Australia in the first game, Nicholas scored in a 12-10 loss to Spain.

Canada will continue pool play Saturday at the second stop on the World Rugby Sevens Series with games against Russia and Brazil.

Last weekend, Nicholas scored a team-high 24 points as Canada placed eighth at the 2021-22 series’ first stop, also in Dubai.

Kings’ losing streak hits 11 games

The Dresden Kings’ losing streak hit 11 games Friday with a 9-1 home loss to the Lakeshore Canadiens.

The Kings have been outscored by a combined 79-20 during the streak.

They’re in last place in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division with a 2-14-1-0 record.

They suffered three losses to the first-place Canadiens (17-0-0-0), all by the same 9-1 score, in an eight-day span.

Myles Fraser scored for the Kings and Joseph Malinowski made 35 saves in front of 115 fans at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.

Marco Sladoje and Dylan Weston each scored two for the Canadiens, who led 3-0 after one period and 7-1 after two. Bryce Scarlett, Trevor Larue, Parker Jacques, Aedan Sullivan and Christian Oomen added singles.  Trevor Heslop made 19 saves.

The Kings will host the Amherstburg Admirals this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Maroons release Fraleigh to Braves

The Chatham Maroons have released rookie forward Brody Fraleigh to the Brockville Braves of Central Canada Hockey League.

The 18-year-old from Wallaceburg had two goals, one assist and 18 penalty minutes in 14 games in his first season with the Maroons.

Fraleigh played in 2019-20 with the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks. In 2020-21, he joined the Brockville Tikis of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Ex-Maroon Stubberfield joins Lincs

Ex-Chatham Maroons forward Adrian Stubberfield debuted with the St. Marys Lincolns on Friday in a 5-2 win over the St. Thomas Stars.

The Chatham native, who’ll turn 19 on Dec. 24, had nine goals and 31 assists in 50 games as a Maroons rookie in 2019-20.

Brochu second star in Knights’ win

Knights goalie Brett Brochu of Tilbury made 32 saves and was the second star in Friday’s 4-1 win over the Erie Otters in London.

Brochu (15-4-1-0) leads Ontario Hockey League goalies with a .920 save percentage and ranks second with a 2.51 goals-against average.

FireWolves’ Durston set for NLL opener

Albany FireWolves forward Jordan Durston of Wallaceburg is set to begin his sixth season in the National Lacrosse League.

This is Durston’s second season with the franchise formerly known as the New England Black Wolves.

The FireWolves will play the Toronto Rock in the season opener Saturday in Hamilton.

Durston, 27, has 211 points in 81 regular-season games.

He played two NLL seasons with the Vancouver Stealth and two more with the Buffalo Bandits before playing one with the Black Wolves.

Robinson, Portz fourth in short program

Alyssa Robinson of Ridgetown and junior dance partner Jacob Portz of Calgary were fourth in the rhythm dance, or short program, with 54.06 points at the Skate Canada Challenge in Regina on Friday.

They were 1.22 points behind the third-place team going into the free dance, or long program, on Saturday.

The Skate Canada Challenge is a qualifying event for novice, junior and senior skaters trying to earn berths at the Canadian championships Jan. 6-13 in Ottawa.
