Brianna Fraser of Sarnia is on Team Canada for the United World Wrestling under-23 championships to be held Oct. 17-23 in Pontevedra, Spain.

Fraser will compete in the women’s 72-kg division.

Canada’s 19-athlete team was announced Thursday.

“The team has a variety of internationally experienced wrestlers, along with some athletes competing in their first world championships,” Wrestling Canada Lutte high-performance director Chris Woodcroft said in a statement. “Canada has traditionally performed well at the U23 level, and we feel we have an excellent squad ready to compete with the best in the world.”

Fraser won gold and silver at the 2022 Canadian wrestling trials, placing first at the senior championship and second at the junior championship.

The St. Patrick’s graduate won an individual silver at the 2022 OUA championships while helping the Brock Badgers win the women’s team title.

The field at the U23 worlds has 15 senior world medallists, including eight senior world champions.

Hirtle wins weekly award at Laurier

Basketball player Cassidy Hirtle of Sarnia is an athlete of the week at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Hirtle scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting and had two steals in the Golden Hawks’ 66-64 exhibition loss to the York Lions last week.

The Northern graduate was named to the all-rookie team and the second all-star team in the OUA West Division last season.

Irish edge Vikings in senior hoops

The host St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish edged the Northern Vikings 50-49 in LKSSAA Tier 1 senior girls’ basketball Thursday to create a three-way tie for first place.

St. Patrick’s, Northern and Great Lakes are 4-1, but Great Lakes will go to the AA playoffs while St. Pat’s and Northern go to the AAA playoffs.

Great Lakes won 59-16 over Lambton Central (0-5). Wallaceburg (2-3) won 46-26 over McGregor (1-4).

In Tier 1 junior, Taryn Stoukas scored 19 for St. Patrick’s (4-0) in a 70-32 win over Northern (3-1). Also, Chatham-Kent beat Ursuline 42-29.

Eagles, Chevaliers share first place

Natalie Scott’s 14 points led the North Lambton Eagles to a 45-24 win over the Tilbury Titans in LKSSAA Tier 2 senior girls’ basketball Thursday.

Kamryn Breault scored 16 and Raegan Harrison added 11 for the Saint-Francois-Xavier Chevaliers in a 44-21 win over the Pain Court Patriotes.

North Lambton and Saint-Francois-Xavier share first place with Blenheim at 4-1.

Blenheim beat Ridgetown 32-20 and Lambton-Kent downed Chatham Christian 54-13.

Lions host Royals in soccer twinbill

The Lambton Lions soccer teams will end the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season with a doubleheader Saturday against the Redeemer Royals at Lambton College.

The women’s game is at 2 p.m. and the men’s game is at 4 p.m.

On Wednesday, Sarah Kirk and Abbey Connell scored for the Lions women’s team (0-7-2) in a 3-2 loss to the Conestoga Condors in Kitchener.

The Lions men’s team (1-8-0) lost 7-0 to the Condors.

Lambton shut out in doubleheader

The Lambton Lions will wrap up the OCAA softball regular season with two weekend doubleheaders. They’ll host the Seneca Sting at 4 p.m. Saturday at Tecumseh Park and visit the Sheridan Bruins on Sunday in Brampton.

The Lions have a 5-15 record after suffering a pair of 15-0, four-inning losses to the St. Clair Saints on Wednesday in Windsor.

The Lions managed only two hits in Game 1 and were no-hit in Game 2.
