Bronze for Santavy at Pan Am meet

Sarnia’s Boady Santavy won a bronze medal at the Pan American senior weightlifting championships in the men’s 89-kilogram division with a snatch of 168 kg recently in Caracas, Venezuela.

Santavy retired after missing his next two snatch attempts and didn’t take part in the clean and jerk.

“It’s disappointing, because training has gone really well,” he said on the International Weightlifting Federation website.

“I don’t know why, but I just didn’t feel good today, and my head wasn’t there for the 207(-kg) clean and jerk I’d have needed (to move up a few places). It wasn’t worth risking it.”

Six-foot-eight centre Darius Schmidt of Waterdown has committed to the Lambton College men’s basketball team for next season.

“Hopefully fans see a lot of rebounds from me,” Schmidt said in a statement. “I also like to get out and run in transition, as I like to play a fast-paced game. I’m just really looking forward to this opportunity and I can’t wait.”

The Waterdown District secondary schooler plays club basketball for the Burlington Force. He’s the fifth player to commit to the Lions for the 2024-25 season.

“Darius is a great signing for our program,” Lions head coach James Grant said. “He is a tremendous athlete who we expect to help us on both ends of the court . . . We have put an emphasis on getting bigger and more athletic moving ahead, and Darius checks both of those boxes.”
