The Ontario Volleyball Association will be holding a town hall meeting on Aug. 10 to inform teams of the rules and protocols in place for the season.

“The biggest thing that’s going to look different right out of the gate is how tryouts are going to look,” said Tara Williams, coach and manager of the club.

The OVA has made changes to the way tryouts will be held through an application process.

Stage one of the three stage process is registration, which is open until Aug. 31. This allows teams to re-sign players that they had the year previous.

The second stage will allow clubs to post a call sheet for how many athletes they need on each team.

Athletes will be able to apply to those spots in stage three.

“We really are hoping to be able to hold some kind of normal tryout,” said Williams. “It won’t be an open tryout where all of a sudden 60 or 70 girls show up. It’ll be a very controlled environment.”

Tryouts for the indoor season typically begin in early September, and they are hoping to keep that the same this year.

As the teams wait for the directions from the association, they also wait on locations to be able to play.

“We all rely on our local school gyms to run our practices, tryouts and tournaments,” said Williams.

“Right now, both local school boards are not approving permits yet. They’re doing the same thing, waiting for direction from the ministries, and waiting for directions from the government about when they can open up.”

The tournament season, which usually begins in November, has been pushed to January to give extra time for booking spaces and creating safety protocols.

“The Ontario Volleyball Association is working really hard to make sure our athletes come back to a very safe environment,” said Williams.

“People need to feel safe to come back to sports, so I think it’s going to be super important that we’re able to say, ‘Here’s our protocol, and here’s what we’re going to be doing to keep our athletes safe.’”
