Hockey Notebook: Warriors, Cyclones recognized by GOJHL as part of year-end honours

Stratford Warriors and Listowel Cyclones players were recognized by the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League as part of its year-end honours.

Stratford captain Zac McCann was named to the Midwestern Conference’s First All-Star Team. He was joined by fellow forwards Jacob Coulson (Cambridge) and Brody Leblanc (Elmira), defencemen Derek Pys (Cambridge) and Nathaniel Mott (Elmira) and goalie Daniel Botelho (Elmira).

Listowel forward Jaden Goldie was part of the Second All-Star Team along with forwards Jacob McEachern (Kitchener-Waterloo) and Jaxson Murray (Elmira), defencemen Daniel Heath (who started the season in Stratford before going to Cambridge) and Mitchell Young (Kitchener-Waterloo) and Elmira goalie Matthew Lunghi.

Murray and Young were also named to the All-Rookie Team, along with Warriors goalie Marcus Vandenberg and Cyclones forward Travis Verbeek. Forward Luke Bibby (Cambridge) and defenceman Zack Sandhu (Ayr) rounded out the squad.

The Western Conference all-stars included two players each from London and Chatham and one from LaSalle and Leamington. The Flyers had three players on the All-Rookie Team. St. Thomas, Chatham and London had the others.

Cambridge became the first team to advance to the Sutherland Cup tournament after winning the Cherrey Cup.

The RedHawks, after charging up the Midwestern Conference standings in the second half of the season, finished three points back of first-place Elmira entering playoffs. The teams met in the league final, with Cambridge — after dropping the first game 7-3 — winning the next four, including Thursday’s 4-1 victory in Elmira.

Chatham leads Leamington 3-2 in the Western Conference final and hosts Game 6 Saturday. St. Catharines led Hamilton 3-2 in the Golden Horseshoe final prior to Game 6 Friday night.
