“There is so much excitement and anticipation around the inaugural year of the PWHL, and just when you think it couldn’t get better, I get to play the sport I love and continue my career with the New York team,” Shelton, 25, said in a release. “Talk about an astonishing place on its own, and now we get to play hockey there, that tops it all off. I am so excited to be in this centre with such an amazing group of athletes.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the successes we have, meet the fans, and connect with the surrounding communities.”

New York selected Shelton fourth overall in the inaugural PWHL draft in September. The national team defenceman and OIympic gold medallist is one of more than 40 PWHL players who have signed, as the league’s six teams get ready to open training camp later this month.

Financial details weren’t disclosed, but the average annual salary is expected to be $55,000, with some players making at least $80,000.

“(Shelton’s) talent, maturity, leadership and passion are undoubtedly qualities that will not only elevate everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her, but collectively, they pave the way for us to be a leading organization in our relentless pursuit of excellence,” New York general manager Pascal Daoust said.

A schedule hasn’t been released for the 24-game season, which is set to begin in January.

“I’m going to go in there and be the best version of myself, grow as a player,” Shelton said after being drafted. “There’s an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, test some new things and push my game. I get to play against some of the best players in the world and play alongside some of the best players. It’s a big challenge, but I’m ready for the challenge and will embrace it completely.”
