Lively native and highly decorated figure skater Meagan Duhamel has moved on to the finale of Battle of the Blades, along with parter Wojtek Wolski, after the tandem of Kaitlyn Weaver and Bryan Bickell were sent home on Thursday night.

Duhamel, a world champion and Olympic medallist, and Wolski, a former NHLer, made up one of two pairs that were ranked lowest among the remaining five teams, based on judges’ scores and audience voting from the previous week. Following a skate-off featuring upbeat performances choreographed to dance songs, Weaver and Bickell received the lower scores, sending them off the ice and home.

That left Duhamel and Wolski among four pairs advancing to the season finale, airing this coming Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on CBC TV and the CBC Gem streaming service.

Like all participants in the long-running competition series, which pairs accomplished figure skaters and high-level hockey players, they’re competing to earn money for charity — Duhamel for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation and Wolski for the SickKids Patient Amenities Fund.

The further they progress in the competition, the more they’ll earn for their charities. As participants in the finale, they have a  chance to win $100,000 for the charities of their choice.

Former Sudbury Wolves player Akim Aliu and his partner, Vanessa James, are also among the remaining pairs. The others are Jessica Campbell and Asher Hill, and Carlotta Edwards and Kris Versteeg.
