Corvairs on top of GOJHL standings

The Caledonia Corvairs are making a charge to win their first Sutherland Cup since 2016.

Caledonia, the provincial junior B champions from 2014-16, currently leads the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference with a record of 27 wins, seven losses and one shootout loss.

The team’s 55 points places it first among all 23 teams in the GOJHL, including the Western Conference leading London Nationals (25-10-1-1) and the Mid-Western Conference leading Elmira Sugar Kings (26-11-0-2).

Caledonia is the third-ranked offensive team in the GOJHL with 151 goals scored and is the top defensive team with 77 goals against. They also lead the league with a plus-74 goal differential.

The Corvairs have games in hand on the teams leading them in goal scoring.

Caledonia had a pair of recent games postponed but the Corvairs were back on the ice Saturday when they scored a 3-0 home win against Pelham.

Steve LaForme, Evan Bradacs and Brayden Russell scored for Caledonia as Tyler Clark picked up a pair of assists.

Finn Wilson made 29 saves to record the shutout in his debut for the Corvairs. Caledonia recently acquired Wilson from the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Georgetown Raiders.

ONTARIO JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE – BRANTFORD 99ERS

The 99ers are on a roll.

Playing three times last week, Brantford defeated Burlington 4-3, Milton 5-3 and Caledon 2-1.

Garrett McCabe (1G, 2A) and Evin Kojokaro (2G) had huge games against Burlington. Jonah Ziskinder also scored for the 99ers as Dylan Grover made 37 saves in goal to earn the win.

Once again Kojokaro (2G, 1A) led the way in the game against Milton, with Aaron Andrade (1G, 2A) also posting three points.

Jonah Cochrane (2A), Kyle Burton (1G, 1A), Spencer Vandenberg (2A) and Kyle Ferguson (1G) were key contributors offensively.

Making 35 saves, goaltender Zach Burleigh was the winner.

Second-period goals by Vandenberg and Kojokaro were the difference against Caledon. Grover turned away 18 shots for the win in goal.

GOJHL – BRANTFORD BANDITS

Playing back-to-back road games on the weekend, the Bandits got exactly the same result losing 5-2 to Kitchener-Waterloo and 5-2 to Cambridge.

Juan Agromayor and Will Mathers scored in the second period of the K-W game to tie things up before Kitchener-Waterloo scored three times in the third to earn the win.

Down 5-0 in the second against Cambridge, Blake Clayton and David Bodzai scored for Brantford, with Will Bray picking up a pair of assists.

PROVINCIAL JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE – PARIS TITANS

Paris suffered losses of 7-1 to New Hamburg at home on Saturday and 5-3 to Hespeler on the road on Sunday.

Tyler Crisostomo scored against New Hamburg. Thomas Lonsdale added two goals against Hespeler, with Crisostomo getting one. Owen Switzer recorded a pair of assists.

PJHL – HAGERSVILLE HAWKS

Hagersville’s 2024 slide continued on the weekend.

Following a 7-2 home loss to Grimsby on Saturday, Hagersville dropped a 4-1 decision to Port Dover on Saturday. The Hawks have yet to win any of their five games in January.

Cameron Kay and Nate Veldstra  (1G, 1A each) led the way offensively for Hagersville against Grimsby while Brendan Sullivan recorded the lone goal in the game against Port Dover.

PJHL – PORT DOVER SAILORS

After Port Dover was beaten 5-1 by Dundas and 10-1 by Grimsby, the Sailors scored a 4-1 win against Hagersville.

Gavyn Buch and Brady Seibert scored the goals in the first two games.

Trevor Nunn, David Harvey, Mike Vanacker and Buch were the goal scorers against Hagersville, with Vanacker picking up an assist for a two-point game. Ben Mason also recorded two points with a pair of assists.

Travis Jansen stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced in goal to earn the win.

GREATER METRO JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE – ST. GEORGE RAVENS

In its only game last week, St. George was edged 6-5 by Niagara in overtime.

That was only the second loss in the past nine games for the Ravens.

Reece Furtado (1G, 2A) led the way offensively for St. George against Niagara. Tyler Arthurs (2A) and Anthony Arthurs (1G, 1A) picked up a pair of points each with Adian Waite, Ethan Ingram and Tyler Warnez also scoring.
