Less than three weeks after the Senators ended their season in disappointment, again, the team announced Tuesday that Travis Green has signed a four-year contract to be the team’s head coach.

The 53-year-old Green had an NHL playing career that lasted from 1992-2007 with six teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As an NHL head coach (most recently as the interim boss in New Jersey), his record is a less-than-stellar 133-147-34 (with just one season above .500 — the Vancouver Canucks finished 36-27-6 in a COVID-shortened 2019-20 season).

So, why was he the Senators’ choice, with some high-profile, out-of-work coaches also in the conversation?
