Library deserves better location than Sarnia Arena

Article content

Relocating the Mall Road library to a jury-rigged location on the second floor of the Sarnia Arena shows a singular lack of foresight. Those with vision would look to a new purpose-built library that is done right, not some second-class “after thought” location.

The economics of this move are sketchy and have not been well presented, and yet the public is being polled (sarniaspeaksout.com) to see if they think it is a good idea. The relocation cost of $100,000 mentioned at the city Zoom meeting sounds like a nice round pie-in-the-sky woefully inadequate number.

Why would people be asked their opinion without being presented with cost details? There is no free lunch. Doing so can skew the results of the survey. It is also unfair to counsellors to ask them to vote without solid cost.

Listening to and watching people play hockey is not an activity associated with the quiet enjoyment of a library. Any estimate to relocate to the arena would need to include the visual isolation and sound insulation of the room, but good luck with that.

Second-floor accessibility and parking will be order of magnitude poorer than the existing “age friendly” Mall Road location. I feel sorry for the physically challenged.

And would the relocated library not be expected to pay its portion of the arena maintenance, heating and other utilities or would it be given a free ride?
