Regarding the article Restoration of lighthouse delayed as Bayham council pays off submarine debt (March 9)

Article content

My sympathy goes out to the residents of Bayham municipality. They have been saddled with debt for a post-Second World War toy that literally sank the community financially.

With $4 million remaining to be repaid on the loan for this albatross and a historic lighthouse on the verge of falling into lake Erie, Bayham council should default on the loan for the submarine.

Let the lender decide what to do with this aging relic. Like most military equipment, this sub has a history. Let’s leave it at that.

Blame fed policies

For the first time, Mexico has surpassed Canada as the United States’ largest trading partner. This humiliating fact is the result of the federal Liberal government’s anti-business approach and the unbalanced focus on environmental issues.

Mexico’s focus, to their booming trade success, has been to promote the country as a viable option for industry, while it’s the opposite in Canada with red tape and nonsensical barriers.

This is totally unacceptable when one realizes the resources, expertise, manufacturing capacity, and infrastructure this country has.

Article informative

David Henderson letter, Standards lacking (March 9), made me read Bryan Passifiume’s article Liberals poised to resume funding for UNRWA (March 7) again.

I found the article well written and informative. There are a lot of Canadians who are wary of UNRWA because of their possible ties to Hamas. Henderson fails to mention anything regarding Hamas and the massacre on Oct. 7. People are concerned about what is happening to the people in Gaza, but the article was about UNRWA.

The only bias here seems to be coming from Henderson.

Rein in the GG

Regarding the article Third raise for Governor General will bring annual pay to $363K (March 8)

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon now makes (I find it difficult to use the word “earns”) $362,800 a year. This is outrageous, especially as millions of Canadians are finding it difficult if not impossible to pay their rent and feed their families.

Her automatic annual increase, which was $11,200 this year, her hefty clothing allowance and costly travel expenses need to be cut.

J. Young, London

Get rid of GG

For the love of Canada, can we please get rid of the costly, unnecessary position of governor general. If it takes making changes to our Constitution, then so be it.

With all due respect to the royals, it’s time to cut the apron strings and in the process, cut the purse strings.

If you agree, contact your MP and ask for a referendum on eliminating the governor general. I’m confident the majority of Canadians find this position without merit.
