Re: Remembering music legend Ronnie Hawkins (June 9)

Article content

Many great memories of The Hawk and Rick Danko flooded back after reading that great article by Brian Thompson.

I was at the Summer Garden that Sunday night when Ronnie hired Rick. Our band, then known as the Starlights, consisted of Rick, his brother, Junior, Don Strugnell on piano, Jim Leach on bass, and myself on drums.

We fronted the Hawks a number of times and, on one memorable Sunday, we even shared the stage with the Jerry Lee Lewis Trio.

Rick’s brother, Terry Danko, informed me that his own band, Tin Pan Alley, consisted of himself and Jim Atkinson on guitars, as well as Ed Berta and Tom Wells on drums. Terry added that, back in the day, this band really enjoyed performing in the basement of the Graham Bell Hotel on Dalhousie Street.

Problem of loud vehicles getting worse

Re: City asks province to silence loud exhausts (June 18)

I’ve made many phone calls to the police department after being woken up at 2 o’clock in the morning by exceptionally loud muffler noise. The problem has prompted the writing of many letters to the editor.

It is great that we are hopefully being listened to.

The problem is getting worse, and should not be overlooked like it has been in the past.

Our lives should not be upset by inconsiderate drivers.

Yes to silence

Yes, silence please.  I live near a major intersection in Brantford, and the noise from loud vehicles is disturbing. It is not right that I must pause a conversation until the loud vehicle passes.Coun. Rose Sicoli, do you really tell your husband and friends to get loud mufflers for their motorcycles to be safe?  Rattling the windows of someone’s house when you drive by is not necessary for safety. Do you really believe the last two fatal motorcycle accidents that happened Norfolk were caused because the vehicles could not be heard?I certainly understand the reason for electric vehicles to have a sound, but to make me jump out of my skin when I am out on a walk is not necessary.I do hope they pass a maximum decimal count law soon.  Summer is here and I would like to enjoy sitting in my backyard.D. Enforce current noise bylaw

We have a noise bylaw in this city which police don’t seem to enforce. Council should be asking: Why?

As for the councillor’s comments that motorcycles must be loud for safety, if it was necessary for them to be noisy, the factory would sell them that way. Most motorcycles already have an audible sound. Maybe check your hearing.

What price loyalty?

Every grocery chain has what they call a  “loyalty plan.”  Each purchase can be “rewarded” with “loyalty points.”

These points can be redeemed for cash, travel or merchandise. But we all know that the cost of these plans must be spread over all the purchases made.

Whether you join the plan or not, you pay.

It is not a loyalty plan. It’s a mislabeled no-choice contract to spend indirectly.
