LETTER: Closures and restrictions are not the answer

Article content

We are again being inundated with the many ‘case numbers’ of people who have tested positive for COVID, with the Omicron strain causing the rise. We are told it is highly contagious but less severe and likely to require hospitalization.

In Ontario, Premier Ford has again closed small businesses, expecting that this, and reducing the numbers of people allowed to get together, will stop the spread of the virus.

Has he verified that restaurants, gyms, and small businesses are causing the ‘case numbers’ to rise or whether other interaction is responsible? I think not.

Yet he continues to cause these establishments great hardship. Does it make him feel less guilty by doling out some taxpayers’ money to lessen their pain?

The closures and restrictions have not been effective in mitigating the case numbers  the last few times they were imposed. What makes him believe they will do so this now? With so many people vaccinated and even boosted, what makes the government think these measures will make COVID go away? Is it an infection that can be defeated by the existing measures or something that will ease in its own time?

The federal government plans to mandate international truck drivers to be vaccinated in order to do their jobs. Have they determined that these drivers are responsible for the rising ‘case numbers’? Do they take into account that there is already a shortage of drivers and that such a mandate will result in shortages and an increase in costs to Canadians, many of whom are already struggling to deal with inflation?

If lockdowns, restrictions and mandates have been effective in curbing COVID, why is it necessary to keep repeating and extending them?

To date, no level of government has deemed it prudent to explain to Canadians the how and why or provided transparency and justification to convince the public that they know what they are doing.

Perhaps doing so might elicit the trust and compliance that is lacking.
