In case you were unsure about whether the Ford government was taking global warming seriously, you now have your answer with the announcement that the provincial government is going to pay out $815,000 to Enbridge to hook up 44 new customers in the Brunner area.

The Conservative’s Natural Gas Expansion Program will spend $234 million to hook up 8,750 customers provincewide. That works out to $26,742 per customer. I would think that amount would pay the biggest part of installing electric heat pumps and solar panels on the roofs of those being hooked up and provide them with almost free electric heating.

The program is going to be paid for by taxing gas users one dollar on their gas bills. So let’s get this right, one level of government is taxing your bill to encourage people to use less gas and another level of government is taxing your bill so people can use more gas.

We may not be able to stop all fossil fuel use tomorrow but we have to at least not spend a quarter of a billion dollars to expand the infrastructure that distributes them. We’re either serious about fighting global warming or we aren’t.
