Following COVID protocol is the easiest way to make a difference this holiday season

Article content

I was reading a post on Facebook the other day that really concerned me, what with the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

It read “Before you cancel Thanksgiving and Christmas with your loved ones, remember that this may be the last holiday you have. We are not guaranteed a single minute on this earth. Stop living in fear and embrace life to its fullest”. I can’t believe that there are still people with this mindset.
The top comment on the photo stole the words from my mouth; “Yes. Have a wonderful holiday with your family. Make lots of memories to look back on next year when they are no longer alive as a direct result of your actions.”

I love Christmas, and I have yet to spend one without my family. I am a sucker for tradition, but not when it puts my family at risk. I have yet to say if I will spend Christmas with my family – but if I have to trade one Christmas for as many more as I can, I will.
My job isn’t the same without all of the craft shows, concerts and winter activities. The Christmas season isn’t the same without that warm community feeling that these events bring. Plenty of local businesses are worried about going back into the yellow, and what it will do for their businesses. Charities don’t have the fundraising events that they depend on every year. These are the people that bring our community together, and it’s up to us to be responsible so that they don’t have to suffer for as long.

If the second wave is going to drastically change the way you’ve been living your life, than you haven’t been doing it right. A second wave could have been prevented if everybody was on the same page. Unfortunately, as careful as some of us are, it won ‘t make others act more responsibly. I don’t know how to make other people care about a strangers well-being, except to say that everyone you meet is someone’s someone. If you’re low-risk, than you have been given the opportunity to help those who aren’t as lucky. You don’t need to make a donation, or give up any of your time, you just have to make a few minor everyday changes. We’ve all been given the chance to make a difference!

The sooner that everybody adheres to the rules set in place by our local Health Unit, the sooner everything can go back to normal. See you all on the other side!
