It’s hard to get back into the swing of normal life

Article content

It is hard to get back into the swing of normal life after so many days of festivities and frivolity. Of course, I am not sure what actually is normal life?

I have not yet been able to figure out what day of the week it is without looking at the calendar. With the holidays falling on Monday and Tuesday, to me Wednesday became Sunday or Monday, and I lost the rest of the week completely. Anyone old and retired I have talked to have had the same issue. It was working that kept us organized, I guess, but it’s OK since we don’t have to be anywhere unless we choose.

I may not get myself back into the swing until maybe May. I kinda like running around constantly addlepated.

Some new words for 2024. Try to fit them into regular conversation.

Addlepated: confused.

Paregoric: camphorated tincture of opium; traditional patent medicine used to control diarrhea, as an expectorant and cough medicine, to calm fretful children and to rub on gums to soothe teething pain.

Contraindications: a condition or circumstance that suggests or indicates a particular technique or drug should not be used in the case in question; something such as symptom or condition that makes a particular treatment or procedure inadvisable.

Penultimate: next to last; second to last.

Appurtenant: constituting a legal accompaniment: auxiliary, accessory.

Atavistic: relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral; happening because of very old habit from a long time ago in human history, not because of a conscious decision or because it is necessary now; recurrence of or reversion to a past style, manner, outlook, approach or activity; feelings or behaviours seem to be primitive like the feelings or behaviours of our earliest ancestors.

It is not unusual for someone to find they are missing a sock or some small item when folding laundry. We say the dryer eats them. I have no idea where they go and that is why I buy socks that all match – a batch of white ones and a batch of black ones. I started this when Morgan lived here because if the dryer was hungry the single sock matched a dozen others so was never alone. It also saved a lot of sorting and matching time.

But have you ever lost a sheet? I have two pillow cases, a flat sheet and a missing fitted sheet. I have never made the bed with only part of the set or washed them separately so where would one fitted sheet go? I know my dryer is never that hungry but who would steal one fitted sheet? Curiouser and curiouser.

I have often talked about things that someone smart should invent to make life easier – well, my life anyway. Like a built-in vacuum that only requires the flick of a switch and it sucks the dust and dirt out of a room. There are several improved appliances that do not require dragging or pushing around a big clumsy canister.

I have found an even better solution that dusts, vacuums, washes floors, etc. They make my house shine and I only have to do occasional touch ups. It’s not Hazel or Alice but just as good.
