Your Library – Heading into the fall season

The special summer activities for children have now wound down as youngsters get ready to go back to school. The summer programs were well attended; 144 children enrolled for the summer reading program. Each week prizes were awarded and several young readers read more than 50 books each during the program. Even toddlers were registered and had a lot of books read to them in July and August.

Freezies, available throughout the summer programs were very popular and sold well.

Your Library – Heading into the fall season Back to video

For the in-branch programs, the highest attendance exceeded 40 for the tie-dye session in July. We were pleased that a number of children who had not previously visited the library took part in the programs and that adults also became new members over the summer.

We can take orders for our Friends of the Library fall plant sale now up to Sept. 3. Pick-up will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the library.

This year, in addition to Garden Mums, planters of Fountain Grass, Echinacea, Sweet William and mixed varieties are being offered. We expect to offer some planters during Fall Fest but there will be no vehicle access to the library during Fall Fest as Main Street will be closed between Church and Eagle streets.

Other early events of the fall season will be held in conjunction with Fall Fest. On Saturday, Sept. 7, children’s activities are planned for inside the library and Norfolk County will offer others in the parking lot. Visit the library meeting room for the book sale.

Our gardens around the library have been colourful and beautifully kept by Jane Kitchen. We are grateful to her for donating her time and effort to the up-keep of the gardens.

Construction of the Reading Garden is expected to begin in late September or October. Remember to check it out for progress every time you visit.

Looking ahead to October, we will be offering a soup-and-sandwich lunch Friday Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the library. The $12 tickets will be on sale mid-September and the price includes soup, sandwich, dessert and beverage. Drop-ins will be welcome and local delivery, if needed, will be included in the price.
