What’s cookin’ at home?

When one is sequestered inside their house only watching and listening to what is going on in the world on TV news, you have to be creative to find inspiration, insight, vision.

Talking to folks on the phone, from a safe distance on the street, or by email, most conversations are on the latest virus news, Trump, yard work and food.

Distroscale

Cooking and baking seem to have taken an uptick lately. I did some baking but since there is no one but me to eat it I figured I better quit. I do love to cook, too, and trying new recipes is a good pastime. Not always having everything needed creates a new pastime – finding substitutes for what you don’t have in the pantry.

Made Chicken Marsala a week ago. Not being a wine drinker, I didn’t have any Marsala so I had to improvise. I used some leftover white wine from Christmas and added a bit of bourbon. Don’t think it tasted like Marsala but it did wonders for the chicken. I ate it for three days with mashed potatoes and rice and it was good. So good, in fact, I didn’t even save any for the freezer.

I have noticed in my phone conversations and emails we discuss what we are eating or the meals we are preparing. Some, like me, are experimenting and trying new things and others are just throwing together whatever is handy and using up frozen leftovers.

One creative sister cut leftover macaroni and cheese, which you know solidifies when it cools, into squares, breaded it and fried it serving it with roasted vegetables. Yeah, I know, eh?

Another sister kept a journal of what she cooked for her two-weeks-plus quarantine after she returned from Florida. When she froze the leftovers she listed them in order of the original meal and then took as many days eating up the leftover – in the same order.

My other sister, I have three and a brother, I was told is busy creating quarantine alcoholic drinks named for each day of the week – Margarita Monday, Whiskey Sour Wednesday, Fuzzy Navel Friday, B52 Shooter Sunday, etc. I keep saying I must be adopted.

My brother brings me food. He’s my favourite.

The point is we seem to be much more preoccupied with food these days. I think we need more laughter than we need food. We must keep our sense of humour through these trying times. I received this email and it made me giggle, so want to share. Even if you got it, too, it will bring a smile again.

“Ontario has banned groups larger than 5. If you’re a family of 6, you’re all about to find out who’s the least favorite!”

“Day 7 at home and the dog is looking at me like ‘See? This is why I chew the furniture!'”

“Health Tip: If you keep a glass of wine in each hand, you can’t accidentally touch your face.”

“The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to return to a society where pants and bras are required!”

“I’m so excited, it’s time to take the garbage out! I wonder what I should wear?”

“Remember when we were little and our underwear had the days of the week on them? They would be very helpful right now.”

“Happy hour is starting earlier and earlier. If this keeps up, I’ll be pouring wine in my cereal!”

“Today’s weather? Room temperature.”

“30 days has September, April, June and November, all the rest have 31… except March which had 8,000.”

“Smoking pot and skipping school had me in trouble constantly. Now weed’s legal and school’s closed… damn kids are livin’ the dream!”

“This is stupid. I just tried to make my own hand sanitizer and it came out as a rum and coke!”

“After a few days of not going out, I saw someone I knew walking by on the sidewalk outside. I immediately ran to the window and started yelling to them. Now I understand dogs.”

Keep smiling. This too shall pass.
