Singing the praises of the Norfolk foundation

Article content

A hometown boy returned home to help raise funds for the Norfolk Community Foundation that distributes thousands of dollars every year to all corners of the county.

Last Saturday night I was treated to a fantastic concert at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover. Cal Dodd (his mother taught music at Port Dover Public School for years) backed by the Swing Orchestra entertained with hit numbers from artists like Bobby Darren, Roy Orbison, Frank Sinatra and others for a magical night at the theatre.

I have heard Cal sing before but this night he and his golden voice was an experience I will remember for a long time.

The reason for this gala event was to raise money for the Norfolk Community Foundation, publicize the reason for its existence, draw new supporters to the foundation and to provide a truly fanastic night for its supporters.

The foundation is truly Norfolk. In the past it has distributed funds to all communities in Norfolk. To name just a few of the recipients: the Delhi Community Health Centre, Waterford Old Town Hall, Norfolk Arts Centre, Norfolk Association for Community Living, Fanshawe College, Port Rowan Skate Park and Shadow Lake Trail.

I could go on and on about the many areas of support it has given the community, but the list is way too long.

The foundation has built a sizeable fund from which the interest gained from it is distributed each year to various applicants.

One of the goals of the foundation is to build this principal so they can support more needs in Norfolk. At present more than $70,000 will be distributed this year.

There are many ways that you can participate in the fund: make a cash donation; donate stocks with capital gains; make it the beneficiary of an insurance policy; put it in your will; create a corporate endowment.

The foundation’s website is www.norfolkcommunityfoundation.ca .

This site will also show you how to apply for monetary grants and who are eligible.

The internet does have its advantages. People keep sending me these incredible quotes from all walks of life and I do appreciate this very much. This week my favourite quote and a very timely quote was from the Buddhist Journal.

“Discussions are always better than arguments, because an argument is to find out who is right and a discussion is to find out what is right.”

Now if the leaders of the various political parties would act like adults and use this bit of wisdom maybe we might have more productive debates and a better chance of solving the country’s problem. It was interesting that the Canada’s deficit is still not part of the political discussion.

Maybe my mother’s philosophy would be a good one for politicians to follow, “Don’t spend if you haven’t got it.”

Mom always managed to balance the budget. I can remember making requests for things and if the money wasn’t there the request was simply turned down. Not a bad way to run the country.
