Random thoughts during the pandemic

These days we have the opportunity to open our minds.

It’s nice to not have to think about what time to get up, what to wear, where I have to be and at what time, what to take out for supper, should I wash my hair, do I have to get gas, what time to leave, what time do I have to be home and all being out-and-about entails.

I do miss going out for lunch, visiting the various thrift stores, art galleries and attending family gatherings. It’s not the doing of these things but, and I know this sounds pretty cliché, it’s the people I would be doing them with that I miss. It’s not the same but we do stay connected.

All this time with uncluttered thinking opens one’s brain to ponder all sorts of interesting, random thoughts. There are so many things I just never thought about before. Some are significant issues and others are not. I do not like dark chocolate.

A haircut is not a DIY project. I tried and if I get the part in the right place it doesn’t look too bad.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why pot, guns and now wrestling are essential. Not that I necessarily accept the claim of a disease, keeping beer and liquor stores open, at least in that respect, makes some sense.

I realized at Easter, with my open mind, I do not like Andrea Bocelli’s singing. Don’t judge. If I had said Kanye most of you would have said, “Yeah, I get that.”

I admit I had never heard of Joe Exotic/Tiger King and have decided I haven’t missed much.

I hate packing my own groceries. I do not have training in grocery bagging and it’s hard, I tell you. It’s a three-man job. I get the grocery cart unloaded then have to run around to fill up my bags, while everyone waits, looking annoyed, until I can then get back to the cashier to pay up. The only thing I know is to put the eggs on top.

My doctor checked up on me, which I think is pretty cool. She sent a long list of possible things to do to help alleviate the stress, anxiety, depression, inactivity, loneliness and increased drinking, seniors who live alone might suffer. I can see where some might have those issues but I don’t. Some of the ideas sounded like fun. One was to make a flag. That was creative so I got out my acrylic paints and an old pillow case. It looks pretty good hanging on the porch. May try a few others, too.

I am doing some virtual travelling. My friend in Hawaii sent me links to various beautiful historical buildings, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and the Manoa Valley Theatre, things I would want to see if I were able to visit her this summer. What a treat. I am even more enthusiastic to experience it all in person when travelling is safe again.

I am sure most of you are starting to zone out from the steady coverage of Covid-19. So am I. I still watch and listen to CTV News Channel and CNN but sometimes find myself listening but not hearing. What I am paying more attention to what is going on around and behind the journalists who are reporting from home. My mind wanders to insignificant yet weirdly fascinating insights into how these people live. In various homes you can see some really strange wallpaper, wild paint colours, vibrant curtains, beautiful antique furniture, fabulous lighting, fireplaces, TVs, stain glass windows, paintings, sculptures and wall hangings. Like most of us they also have lots of tchotchkes and family photos.

I, too, am working from home. I attended this month’s township council meeting from home via conference call. Unlike the journalists who are on camera, I was in my nightgown. I brushed my hair and teeth, poured a cup of coffee and put my feet up. I did wonder if the councilors, department heads and staff were in their office clothes or in their pajamas.

Always lots to do. You know, it just never occurred to me to drink.
