On the 12th day of Christmas

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me… Have you received your partridge and pear tree, yet? Me neither.

Is December 25th the 12th day of Christmas? For many of us Christmas can be stressful and exhausting. Personally, I would not appreciate piping pipers or drumming drummers arriving on Christmas Day. The partridge, French hens and geese better be cooked and ready to serve. Wine poached pears would be great for dessert and I wouldn’t mind the golden rings.

But the leaping lords and milking maids will have to stay outside and the dancing ladies better be the Rocketts. I have no idea what to do with swans, doves or calling birds. Are they edible? Stuffed and roasted or on a beer can in the barbecue? How about deep fried?

It all sounds way too raucous and chaotic to me. All that going on Christmas morning would be very irritating when you haven’t had enough sleep for a week and were up at 4 a.m. to get the turkey in the oven. If you knew the geese, hens, etc. would be cooked then you could have slept in a bit. Well, unless you have young kids who have been up since 3 a.m.

I do not have counter tops or running water in my kitchen yet but I am not stressed. I made sure I would be fed. On Christmas Day I am going to my brother Tim’s for breakfast/brunch, then to niece Julie’s for what I am sure will be lots of snacky stuff and then to sister Thais’ for supper. Having all that looked after, I can focus on getting my kitchen organized, purging and cleaning up the never-ending plaster and sawdust and maybe doing a bit of decorating. It’s all good.

There are lots of things we should be concerned about. There are people out there who do not have enough food to sustain life. There are folks who are all alone in this world. Some folks don’t have jobs. There are families who, never mind about presents, will not have heat or hydro or both on Christmas Day. Service men and women will be away from their families, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect us. The hospitals will be full of people who are sick or dying this Christmas. There are children who do not have a family with whom they can celebrate the holiday. Families in some parts of the world are living through daily bombing and have no hope for survival.

Life is not easy for many people and yet some are concerned about the wording of Christmas and children’s songs. We need to remember the words in these songs are innocent and of the time but, obviously, those who are offended have something terribly wrong with how they think and see the world. Not everything is a slur, offensive or provocative except in a warped mind. I am so sorry for whatever happened to you in your life that has caused you to lose your joy.

It’s a Canadian winter and baby it is cold outside.
