The busy month of February is behind us and both Scotties and Brier Canadian Champions have been declared as we move into the final few weeks of the curling season.

Although Mother Nature has teased us with some warmer days, the cooler weather tends to keep curlers happy to be inside on the ice. Club championship draws are happening in all leagues of the club. With the late start in the fall, the club season has been extended a week allowing leagues time for playoffs.

It also has the club planning a Swing and Sweep event for April. Scheduled for Saturday, April 6th this event involves both curling and golf. A 10-hole fun scramble at the Bridges in the morning with lunch gives way to six ends of fun curling with dinner and tunes to follow. The cost per person is $65 and organizers need their numbers by March 23rd so get your names signed up – foursomes, couples, individuals… whatever! Join in a fun end to one season and beginning of another season. For those of you who might not want to experience the refreshing wind of the fairways other options are being worked out for just curling so look for more information and announcements this week at the club and on the website.

Probably the most exciting happening in the club right now is that our Glendale High School Boys team is on their way to OFSSA, the Ontario High School Provincial Championships. As soon as the break is over the boys will leave Tuesday for North Bay and begin their game play on Wednesday.

The team had finished first in league play – I think they surprised themselves as they had new inexperienced players on the team. Unfortunately they could not ice a team for their first playoff game and had to default to East Elgin.

They came back with a strong win over Central Elgin (12-2) and then beat East Elgin 9-5 in the South East Championship game to advance to WOSSAA championships. WOSSAA, held in Vanastra, saw the team blast their competition defeating Catholic Central 12-1 and Oakridge 11-1 to win the WOSSAA championship. The team of Jayden King as skip, along with Levi Hiscock, Liam Fletcher, Tyler Sinden, and Ben Peever, coached by Ken Patterson and teacher Al Robinson heads to North Bay for OFSSA. We wish the boys good luck, do your best and enjoy the experience! Look for updates all week in the club.

I wanted to make curlers aware of the new lighting that has been installed on the ice, with more work to be completed at the end of the curling season. We don’t always notice what is above us on the ice but I wanted you to know that this upgrade is thanks to a generous donation by club member Marianne Murphy, who by the way also donated money last year for the purchase of the stereo system at the club. The installation of the lights will be done by some electrically talented club members as well. Thank you everyone and especially “Murph” for making this happen.

The Tillsonburg Tier 55 regulars have been on the bonspiel trail, this time to Windsor where they won both games to return home with some more prime cuts for the freezer.

The Women’s World Curling Championships are on now in Silkeborg, Denmark where Canada lost their opening game to South Korea, but got back on track winning the second against Germany. Games run all week being shown on TSN at 4 a.m., 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. most days with the finals Sunday, March 24 at 11 a.m.

The Men’s Worlds will air beginning March 30 also on TSN and will come to us from Lethbridge, Alberta. Not only is Canada the home team, the team is from Alberta so should have a strong fan base. Here’s hoping both of our teams will do well.

Curling rocks!
