Brian Laundrie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head

'The manner of death has been determined to be suicide,' the medical examiner stated

Brian Laundrie, the suspect in the death of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Sarasota Medical Examiner said it had completed its investigation into the death of Brian Laundrie, which included examination of recovered skeletal remains, consultation with a forensic odontologist for dental identification, as well as a forensic anthropoligist.

“The cause of death has been determined to be a gunshot wound of the head. The manner of death has been determined to be suicide,” the statement said.

The Laundrie family lawyer told multiple media outlets that the family had been informed of the results. “Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” attorney Steve Bertolino told The New York Post. “Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.”

Laundrie had been the subject of a mass search after his 22-year-old girlfriend, Gabby Petito, went missing after a the pair embarked on a journey across the United States in a van. Petito chronicled the journey on social media. Laundrie returned to his parent’s home in Florida without Petito on Sept. 1.

Petito’s mother reported her missing 10 days later, and her remains were found in a Wyoming campground on Sept. 19. Her death was ruled a homicide by strangulation.

Laundrie left his parents’ home and was sought for her death and a stolen bank card. Internet sleuths were reporting sightings of him everywhere, including Toronto.

But his skeletal remains were found at the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve near his parents’ home in North Port, Fla., on Oct. 20.
