‘You can work anywhere in the world’

To help raise awareness about the numerous job opportunities available, the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic district school boards are co-hosting an ‘Experience the Trades’ event this week.

Crowds of students from Grades 7 to 12 packed the John D. Bradley Convention Centre during the day on Wednesday, with a special session held for parents and students in the evening.

The event, which continues Thursday, gives young people a chance to learn more about different trades and apprenticeships while networking with businesses.

She said there are jobs that allow employees to earn while they learn.

“We have a huge shortage in skilled trades workers,” she said.

Approximately 4,000 students are expected to attend over the two days.

Benjamin Anderson, a Grade 12 student at Tilbury District High School, said he was pondering a career in the construction field, but had yet to determine exactly what.

He called the trades event a valuable experience.

“I think it’s a good way to spread awareness about all the jobs,” he said.

Kevin Smith, an engineer with Enbridge, said the company’s aim was to educate about the different jobs available and “demystify” gas pipelines.

He said there have been many questions so far.

“It’s great to have all these young kids in,” he said. “We offer a lot of different career opportunities.”

Jamie McMillan, founder of Kickass Careers, an organization that promotes the trades, is an iron worker who helps mentor young people with their different career paths.

She admitted it took awhile to find something she was passionate about, but that all changed when she discovered the trades 17 years ago.

“With trades you can work anywhere in the world,” she said.
