Workers airlifted to Toronto after explosion at Lehigh

Two people are in serious condition after being airlifted to a Toronto hospital with significant injuries after an explosion at a Prince Edward County cement plant Tuesday.

Three workers, believed to be from an outside mechanical company were taken to Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital after an explosion ripped through a kiln at Lehigh Cement Plant on County Road 49, on the outskirts of Picton just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue responded to an initial report of a natural gas explosion at the Lehigh Cement plant in Picton at approximately 8:45am Tuesday morning,” said deputy fire chief Tim Kreamer. “Upon arrival at the plant two plant workers with burn injuries were in care of paramedics and transported to PECMH. A third worker was also injured during the incident. PEC Fire & Rescue assisted to stabilize and secure the scene.”

Two of the workers were airlifted to Toronto via Ornge air ambulances while the third was released from hospital with minor injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the Ministry of Labour and Ontario Fire Marshal’s office with support from the TSSA. The investigation is ongoing.

Calls to the Ministry of Labour for comment on the accident were not immediately returned.
