A weekend garage fire that caused about $3,000 in damages was caused by an improperly installed wood stove, Woodstock Fire Department officials said Monday.

Firefighters responded at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night to a fire in a detached garage. The fire was quickly brought under control with no damage to the home or neighbouring properties.

The department offered the following tips for homeowners to use their wood stoves and fireplaces safely.

  • Creosote, the crusty build-up that can accumulate in woods stoves, can start fires. Avoid it by burning clean, dry wood instead of garbage materials;
  • Regularly remove ashes from wood stoves and fireplaces;
  • Keep combustible items away from the area;
  • Use a properly fitted screen around the fireplace to contain sparks; and
  • Ensuring wood-burning stoves and fireplaces are inspected annually by a qualified technician.
