Darcy Major, 86, was reunited with the wallet that was missing for 54 years after Christopher Camacho found it in an old couch.

Once Camacho found the wallet he took to Facebook and posted about it in the Currently in Port Dover group. Major says his son and daughter received several messages from people telling them about their dad’s wallet being found.

Major and Camacho decided to meet up at the Port Dover Legion last month to go through the contents of the wallet and get to know each other. Camacho’s wife and Major’s daughter tagged along.

“It’s quite a thrill, even though everything is outdated,” said Major. “There’s honest people out there to return it. He could’ve put it in the garbage, and it’s so nice that there’s people like that.”

The wallet included a cheque written out to Dover Auto Body, dated June 1966, paperwork from the Ontario Department of Transportation, a social insurance number card, a dog licence for Major’s old dog Tippy, and a driver’s licence.

Major said he didn’t immediately remember losing his wallet, but he does remember needing to get a new driver’s licence and other paperwork after misplacing it all those years ago.

“I never found the wallet,” Major said in a phone interview.

He also doesn’t recall ever sitting on the couch in which the wallet was eventually found.

“It was unreal, where’s it been for all those years,” Major said of seeing the wallet for the first time in over half a century. “It must have been a good couch.”

Camacho recalled Major from Major’s years of working at the Arbor in Dover.

Major said he now has a lifetime friend in Camacho.

“Thanks so much Christopher for reaching out to me. It meant the world to me.”
