Wallaceburg man facing assault charge

A 51-year-old Wallaceburg man is facing an assault charge after Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance in a parking lot on Grand Avenue in Chatham Wednesday afternoon.

Police said it was learned that the man and woman, who are known to each other,

were arguing when the man allegedly assaulted her.

A concerned citizen intervened and came to the woman’s aid while waiting for police to arrive.

The accused was released with a Dec. 22 court date.

Chatham charged with theft, break and enter

A 31-year-old Chatham woman is facing several charges after Chatham-Kent police responded to a report of a suspicious person in a parking lot on Tweedsmuir Avenue West in Chatham Wednesday night.

Police said a citizen saw someone enter a vehicle and steal various items.

A suspect was arrested and while being searched during the arrest was found in possession of stolen property, police said.

Further investigation revealed the accused was also in possession of stolen property from a residential break and enter in Chatham reported earlier in the day, police said.

The woman was charged with theft under $5,000, break and enter and two counts of being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000, police said.

She was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Wallaceburg man charged for not stopping for school bus

A 55-year-old Wallaceburg man had his vehicle towed after being charged with failing to stop for a school bus.

The Chatham-Kent police traffic unit was monitoring the school zone on Murray Street in Wallaceburg near Holy Family school Wednesday afternoon in response to complaints that drivers were not stopping for school buses.

Police said the accused was stopped and charged with failing to stop for a school bus and driving without a licence.

Police remind drivers the fine for failing to stop for a school bus with its lights activated is $490 plus six demerit points.

“The real tragedy would be if you struck a child getting on or off the bus, so please use caution when travelling during school hours,” police said. “The safety of our children is a shared responsibility.”
