Last week, Norfolk council approved the construction of a 4,800-square-foot repair shop at 810 St. John’s Road West in the former Charlotteville Township. Sponsors of the development are Bob and Meaghan Jacobs, who reside at this address.

In a letter to neighbours, Jacobs Diesel Repair says the current location it rents is no longer viable. The Jacobs have decided to build a facility at their home, a move requiring a site-specific amendment in the agricultural zone.

“It is the opinion of planning staff that the proposed application is compatible with surrounding land uses,” Norfolk planner Fabian Serra said in a recent report to Norfolk’s public hearings committee..

The same report notes that the Jacobs have discussed the proposal with neighbours, some of whom have signed off with no objections.

“We do not intend to repair vehicles around the clock and will keep the noise to a minimum,” the Jacobs said in a letter headed “Dear Neighbour.”

“We have stored our transport trucks and trailers on our property since we moved here in May, 2009, making sure our drivers are aware of our neighbours and keeping the noise down when they are leaving early in the morning or late at night to be respectful of everyone in the area.”

Vittoria Coun. Chris Van Paassen told Norfolk council this is a good example of progress in the agricultural zone.

“They have had a shop for years,” he said. “Over time, machinery has got bigger and bigger. And you can’t work outside all year around.

“They are another example of Norfolk ingenuity where you start small and grow from there.”
