The municipal operations centre at 408 James St. S., which houses the town’s parks, public works, building development, IT and finance offices, was closed to the public on Monday and will remain closed for the remainder of the week to allow contractors to replace all of the hard-surface flooring in the  building.

“It’s both the same project. We’d issued a (request for proposals) for flooring replacement, so all the hard-surface flooring within the (operations centre) is going to be changed,” said St. Marys director of building and development Grant Brouwer, adding the flooring in both buildings has reached the end of its lifespan. “What we call vinyl composite tile will be changed over to what we call ‘Luxury’ tile, but it’s just a brand name. Basically it’s very similar to what we have in the (Pyramid) recreation centre.

After the operations centre reopens next week, town hall will then be closed to public for the installation of new flooring.

“In the town hall, it’s a little different. We have carpet in a number of areas. All the carpet is coming out and we’re putting vinyl tile all the way throughout,” Brouwer said. “There’s a lot more maintenance to a carpet than there is vinyl tiles. … The shutdown is only for a week because it will only impact those front office areas for a week, and there’s spots we can get to later that won’t impact the front counter.”

Staff at both public buildings will be working throughout the closures and will be available by phone or email during regular working hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to call 519-284-2340 for assistance or email communications@town.stmarys.ca with questions or concerns.
