The Songwriters’ Circle set for Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. will welcome three singer-songwriters Scott Nolan, Joe Nolan and Scott Cook. Without planning or rehearsal, they’ll blend their musical talents.

“It was kind of started by Ian Matty here because of a rock the house concert series with him and his wife in Winnipeg. Joe and I had known each other for years but we’re not related, the last name is a coincidence, and there was an idea that we were two songwriters who could probably interact on each others songs,” explained Scott Nolan, guitarist and singer. “We paired up for a show where we trade songs back and forth to talk about the writing and the stories and it was a really great natural fit.”

The trio has performed four shows as part of this tour and five shows with this premise, and they have been a hit so far.

“We decided for these shows that we wouldn’t make any preparations and put the faith and trust in each other’s abilities,” Nolan said. “The audience gets to see something happen in real time and we’re not doing each other’s songs that we’ve prepared a list of. We’re pulling songs out on the fly and improvising, which really adds to the charm.”

Joe Nolan, a guitarist and singer from Fort Saskatchewan, said he has played festival place in the past and is excited to return with a bigger show. Recently nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Contemporary Singer Award, he said he prefers the term roots music because it has a mix of blues, folk and other styles.

“It is a different show each time,” explained Joe Nolan. “Everything is unscripted, and it makes it exciting for us and the audience as well and leaves things open for spontaneity.”

Both singer-songwriters agreed that it going to be a truly unique experience for those in the audience because you never know what will happen.

“The audience gets a little glimpse of the behind the scenes and front of scenes simultaneously, and there has been no opportunity for a big rehearsal, which I think makes for something exciting,” Nolan said. “It takes a lot to accompany someone on the fly like that and you really have to bring your best and your presence.”
