Second straight day of seven new COVID-19 cases in Haldimand-Norfolk

For the second straight day, the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit was reporting Friday seven new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours.

The number of active cases continues to increase, moving from 26 on Thursday to 31 on Friday.

The two communities have recorded 48 deaths since the start the pandemic and there were six others who tested positive but died from complications attributed to other illnesses.

Since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020 there have been 2,881 positive results in the area with 2,796 of the cases resolved.

The HNHU has administered 135,498 doses of the vaccine and there are now 61,386 people who have completed their vaccine series.

The total number of doses administered in Haldimand-Norfolk is 157,474. Some residents of the area have received a dose outside of the HNHU.

In total, 81.6 per cent of the population aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The percentage of people who are fully vaccinated sits at 75.4. The percentage of the population that has received one dose is at 6.2 while the percentage of people who have yet to receive a dose is 18.4.

The health unit notes that data on vaccinations can be delayed up to 48 hours.

A vaccine clinic will operate at the Norfolk General Hospital from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

Those who can’t get to a vaccine clinic can call 519-427-5903 to request free transportation.

There is also a homebound service for individuals who have difficulty leaving their homes. That program involves two healthcare professionals visiting homes and administering first and second doses in Haldimand and Norfolk.

An outbreak at RVilla Caledonia Retirement Living in Haldimand continues to increase with nine residents and one staff member testing positive as of Friday’s report.

On Friday, Public Health Ontario reported 795 new cases over the past 24 hours. Of those, 582 were attributed to people who were not fully vaccinated or whose status was unknown.

The number of confirmed deaths in the province since the start of the pandemic stands at 9,637 after there were five more deaths reported from Thursday.

In Ontario, a total of 21,318465 doses of the vaccine has been administered with 10,256,563 people completing their vaccine series. That translates to 84.84 per cent of all residents aged 12 and older who have received one dose and 78.67 per cent who have received two doses.
