If you are looking for an entertaining New Year’s Eve in Tillsonburg, plan to attend the Town of Tillsonburg’s ’20s New Year’s Eve Party.

A gala 1920s night, guests are encouraged to dress with that theme in mind – organizers even have costume prizes – or come in semi-formal wear if that’s not your thing. The Lions Auditorium at the Tillsonburg Community Centre will be transformed into a hall of glitz and glamour where you will be transported back to the 1920s (think of the Great Gatsby movie).

Live music and entertainment will be provided by the Wintergarten Orchestra, a 12-person band playing a variety of music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Tickets ($95) are available at the Tillsonburg Community Centre Customer Service Desk or online through www.eventbrite.ca (Tillsonburg New Year’s Eve 20s Gala Party). This is a 19-plus event.

Tuesday’s town-organized New Year’s Eve celebration begins at 8:30 p.m. and includes three drink tokens, a champagne toast at midnight, party favours, and finger foods all night. A cash bar will be available serving classic drinks as well as specialty 1920s cocktails.

Planning for the gala event began back in May 2019.

“The idea is to bring in 2020 by celebrating in an ambiance that emulates the 1920s – a little bit of glitz and glamour and Great Gatsby,” said Rick Cox, Town of Tillsonburg’s Director of Recreation, Culture and Parks. “It will be fun for those who want to let loose a little bit in Tillsonburg on New Year’s Eve.

“I think the Wintergarten Orchestra is going to be absolutely fabulous – they look the part, they dress the part, they sing the part, they perform the part. This is the real deal.”

The idea for the gala night was presented to the town by individuals from the community, said Cox.

“It seemed like a fun opportunity – connecting 2020 to the 1920s.”

Organizers have some great food lined up for the party, catered by Paninos from Woodstock, available all night.

Specialty cocktails will be sold by The Peachy Rooster, a mobile bar, also from Woodstock.

“We challenged them to come up with some ideas for cocktails that celebrated the 1920s theme, and they’ve done it. I think we’re going to have a whole lot of fun.”

Cocktails will include the gin-based French ’75… a Whiskey Sour… and the Rum Runner.

“Three signature cocktails that celebrate that era,” said Cox. “There will also be other beverages, but those are the features.”

The event is not a costume party, Cox noted, but he is hoping participants buy into the theme and ‘step it up a little bit.’ With a little imagination, affordable costumes can be found at thrift stores. For ideas, see the event’s Instagram page (tillsonburgnye).

“We want to see folks come out and have a good time.”

T-Go Transit service, through sponsorship from MADD London, will operate on the Red Line route free of charge starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 3 a.m.

“We want people to get there and get home safely, and have a good time while they’re doing it.”

Earlier Tuesday night, families will be skating at the Tillsonburg Community Centre from 7-9 p.m. during the town’s annual New Year’s Eve skate.
