Pumkinfest organizers announced on Facebook that they will hold an online pumpkin decorating contest, and the house and business decoration contests.

“We are excited to officially announce that we are moving ahead with a couple of events for 2020,” read the social media announcement.

They will be foregoing the car show, parade, fireworks, and pumpkin pyramid to avoid large gatherings of people.

“We really wanted to do something that would bring some spirit to Waterford, keep some activities, and let people enjoy something,” said co-chair of the event, Matt Suckle in a phone interview last week. “But we were also cognizant that we didn’t want to introduce what would draw people to one place.”

Back in April, Suckel explained that it was a tough time for festivals because organizers didn’t feel comfortable asking their local sponsors for money when businesses were going through the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

“We had some meetings in August, we had to figure out what we could do in times when we don’t want to encourage people to get together,” said Suckel. “We really appreciate the community and the support that we have. The committee, Lions, and Lioness are excited about this year.”

Pumpkinfest organizers hope to keep entries for the pumpkin decorating to local kids only.

Updates and deadlines on the contests can be found on the Waterford Pumpkinfest Facebook page. Winners of the contests will receive a small cash prize.

“Look forward to future posts both here and on the website with the exact rules and details for both of these,” continued the Facebook post. “We would love to see the town jump in and celebrate Fall Harvest and Halloween!”
