POLICE BRIEFS: Walpole man charged with arson

An 18-year-old Walpole Island man has been charged with arson following an incident on Wednesday in which three small fires were started in a ditch were started in the area of St. Clair Road near Spurgeon Line.

Police said a man was observed shortly after 12 noon lighting a small fire in the ditch with dead leaves a grass. The fire started to spread through the dead grass towards a wheat field but was contained by someone passing by.

Police say the suspect continued walking but started two more small fires. They were extinguished by a nearby farmer.

The accused was arrested on St. Clair Road between Eberts Line and Brook Line.

He has a court date in Chatham on Sept. 9.

 

Threw rock at window

A 24-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with mischief after a rock was thrown at a window, causing it to break, on property at Richmond Street in Chatham.

Police found the man a short distance away on Wednesday morning and he was arrested, charged and then released.

He has a Sept. 30 court date.

Four-vehicle collision

Police on Wednesday afternoon responded to a four-vehicle collision on Grand Avenue East near Prince Albert Road in Chatham.

No one was injured and one of the drivers was charged with careless driving.
