Norfolk adjusts payment due dates

Norfolk County has made additional adjustments to billing due dates in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
At a special meeting of Norfolk council April 7, the county agreed to defer the first payment of 2020 tax bills to July 31.
By the end of July, those who have yet to make a payment this year will be expected to pay the March 31 and May 29 instalments. These payments can be made by July 31 without interest penalty.
The deferral became possible, council heard, when the province informed municipalities they can hold off remitting the education portion of local taxes.
As well, Norfolk recently issued a raft of billings to property owners across the county for payments owing for the care and upkeep of municipal drains. Some of these accounts date back several years.
At the April 7 meeting, council agreed to defer these payments till September.
“I’m happy to move this motion,” said Charlotteville Coun. Chris Van Paassen. “This will possibly stop my phone from ringing.”
Port Dover Coun. Amy Martin has also had conversations with constituents about the care and upkeep of their drainage networks.
“We can’t anticipate a pandemic, but the timing of this is poor,” she said. “I would appreciate a delay of this.”
