The Fall of the Flarettes is a new musical murder mystery dinner theatre show presented by local actors Becky Coward, Victoria Coward, Stephanie McDonald, Laura Morland and Jason Leighfield.

Indigo Lounge Organic Eatery owner Kelly Spencer is planning an evening of mystery, music, food and fun, interaction with the actors, and even some audience participation.

“I went to a murder mystery last year and I just thought it was so much fun, we just had a great time,” said Spencer who did not successfully guess the murderer (although her daughter did).

“It really tapped into that creativity that people, I think, have been drawn to since the beginning of time. Like live music and live theatre, and sharing meals together. It seemed like a good fit for Indigo Lounge Wellness Centre because we promote and celebrate creativity and arts as part of happiness and health.”

Spencer approached some actors in town, asking if they would be willing to do a murder mystery at Indigo Lounge, and gave them some ideas.

“They are actors, but two of them are also in a band so they wanted to make it a musical as well. So they wrote their own play.”

The actors will perform between meal courses, creating drama and presenting multiple suspects, and in some cases even approaching people to read a paragraph for audience participation – no memorization of lines required.

“They might walk around while people are eating to do some character development and clue dropping, just stopping by a table and saying, ‘Can you believe what she just said back there? I can’t even believe it!’

“At the end it could have been any number of characters who actually murdered somebody. Each guest guesses who the murderer was and how they did it, and whoever gets it right (if there’s more than one there will be a draw) wins a prize.”

Spencer, who has not read The Fall of the Flarettes script, does not know who the murderer is.

“No,” she laughed. “No I don’t. They haven’t revealed anything to me. I haven’t a clue.”

‘Tickets’ ($55) include an appetizer, choice of soup, choice of entree, complimentary glass of wine, and dessert, coffee/tea, along with musical entertainment and a chance to win with the right ‘whodunit’ guess. The winner gets a dinner for two at Indigo Lounge. To make reservations call Indigo Lounge email info@indigolounce.ca or phone 519-688-1188 – they won’t be printing actual tickets.

Spencer said The Fall of the Flarettes is about a group of showgirls competing for the spotlight and their manager.

“Some are main singers and some are backup singers that want to be the main singers. They created a play with singing in it.”

She anticipates the evening, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on the 21st, will be about two-and-a-half hours.

“A lot of it is impromptu, go-with-the-flow acting,” said Spencer, who has spots for 28 people.

“It’s small and intimate. I’ve been to bigger ones before and I liked it, but you couldn’t hear what they were saying when they were across the room talking, so you missed a lot of the dialogue and character development.

“We thought this would be a perfect venue for it.”
