For months, the Fort RCMP have been performing proactive patrols in the community, netting a number of drugs and weapons seizures in the process.

The latest incident took place on Sunday, July 5, where officers patrolling the downtown core spotted a suspicious vehicle and conducted a vehicle stop.

“As a result, they entered into a drug investigation where the occupants were taken into custody,” explained Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Cst. Hayley Townsend.

RCMP searched the vehicle and discovered a number of illicit items, including quantities of fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as a baton and bear spray.

“These are lethal drugs. Although they were smaller quantities, it is still concerning to have these drugs on the street,” noted Townsend.

Rebecca Cardinal, 27, of Edmonton, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Lorraine Cardinal, 53, of Edmonton, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance.

The mother-daughter duo is expected to be before a judge in Fort Saskatchewan in the fall on Sept. 10.

Townsend added this case is just one of the latest arrests in their work to keep the community safe through proactive patrols.

“We’ve been really proactive and are making sure we’re out in the public and checking anything that seems unusual and pulling lots of vehicles over and making these discoveries,” outlined the constable. “We haven’t really received more tips from the public. I don’t think our increased traffic presence is a result of public tips. I think it is because we have been a lot more visible and are being very proactive in the community.”

Residents are encouraged to report any tips about criminal activity to RCMP or Crimes Stoppers.
