Norfolk OPP reported Wednesday that Gerrod Richard Young, 25, was charged Monday following a lengthy investigation.

Police say they and Norfolk paramedics were called to a home on Sunninghill Drive in Port Dover around 2:15 a.m. March 28 in response to a “medical incident” involving a three-month-old child. The infant was later pronounced dead in hospital.

A Facebook page in the name of Gerrod Young, who is the same age of the accused, says he is a mine maintenance mechanic in Hagersville. The page mentions that Young is trained as a welder and hails from Port Dover.

Information obtained from the Norfolk County courthouse in Simcoe Wednesday says Young resides in Simcoe.

An official with court services in Simcoe says information regarding the case that might identify witnesses or the complainant is under a publication ban. As such, the name of infant cannot be shared with the public.

Young was the subject of a video-link bail hearing Wednesday. The proceeding ended inconclusively because justices of the peace are not authorized to preside over bail hearings where the charge is murder.

Young was remanded in custody for a second video bail hearing, which will take place Thursday morning in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
