Harold Stewart Jr., 43, of Vittoria, a founding member of the Veterans Coalition Party of Canada, will represent the same locally in the Oct. 21 federal vote.

Distroscale

Stewart was a member of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery when, 20 years ago, he served for two years in Bosnia. He has turned his attention to politics now that he is collecting a military pension.

Stewart – an officer of the Veterans Party – says he and his co-founders were politicized as they watched the Liberal government fight with the Canadian military for resources even as it was delivering billions in foreign aid to foreign governments, some of which spent the funds on their own military.

“That’s why this party was created,” Stewart said last Monday. “When Trudeau was elected, I said give him a chance. But I never thought he’d do this poorly.”

VCP’s priorities include providing seniors with a dignified retirement, ensuring Indigenous reserves have access to safe drinking water and reducing taxes and regulations as a means of spurring the Canadian economy.

“Our message is it’s taxpayers’ money – not government funds,” Stewart said. “We pay the bills; they don’t pay ours. This is a grassroots party.”

Conservative Diane Finley is seeking a sixth term. She is also being challenged by Liberal Kim Huffman, Bob Forbes of the People’s Party of Canada, Lilly Eggink of the Christian Heritage Party and Brooke Martin of the Green Party.

The New Democrats have not yet announced a candidate.
