The event has grown from 30 cyclists in the first year to more than 800 in recent years. With that number of riders and volunteers, it would put the event around 1,000 people in one place.

“We don’t think that it’s going to be possible to have that many people together,” said Yvette Mahieu, co-ordinator of Le Tour de Norfolk. “Even if groups were allowed to congregate people would be leery, and I’m not comfortable asking volunteers to come out.”

The executives decided if they couldn’t do it the way they wanted to do it, they would need to delay the event.

Mahieu said sponsors are a big part of making an event like this happen.

“We’ve had such great sponsors over the years, like every year I can count on these sponsors,” said the coordinator. “It’s totally unreasonable for me to go and ask these businesses to sponsor us while they’re having such tough times.”

The 150 people that were already pre-registered for the 2020 event have been given the option to either receive a full refund or have their registration pushed to the next event.

“We already have people registered for next year.”

The date for the next event has been announced as July 18, 2021.
