“Not only can leaves cause clogged sewer drains and make sidewalks and roadways slippery, but they also hinder the work of street sweepers,” Norfolk County said in a news release this week.

Instead, property owners are encouraged to collect their leaves, pack them into biodegradable paper yard bags, and put them curbside the evening before their regular trash collection. The last week for the yard waste collection this fall is Nov. 23-27.

Affected communities include Long Point, Simcoe, Port Dover, Langton, Port Rowan, Turkey Point, Vittoria, St. Williams, Courtland, Delhi and Waterford.

The county also encourages residents to mulch leaves directly into their lawns or compost them in a discrete location on their property.

Residents can also dispose of biodegradable bags of clean yard waste free of charge at Norfolk waste transfer stations in South Walsingham and  Simcoe.
