A heat warning issued earlier this week by Lambton Public Health has been extended by Karalyn Dueck, Lambton County’s medical officer of health, as hot and humid weather now is forecast to continue in the Sarnia area through Friday.
Previously, the public health agency said the heat warning might continue until Thursday.
Environment Canada’s forecast at noon Thursday called for a high of 31 C on Friday.
“Extended heat warnings are issued when a heat warning continues beyond two days,” Lambton Public Health said.
“This is also when vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant individuals, people who work outdoors, and individuals who are under-housed or experiencing homelessness and are without access to air conditioning, are most at risk.”
The agency is urging residents to drink plenty of cool liquids, schedule outdoor activities for cooler periods of the day, wear loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing, take a break by spending time in a community centre, library or other cool places, and to check on vulnerable relatives and neighbours.
Information about the impact of extreme heat on health, as well as a listing of local cooling centres, can be found online at lambtonpublichealth.ca, or by calling 519-383-8331, the agency said.
