The Norfolk General Hospital golf tournament, held annually at the Norfolk Golf and Country Club, has been cancelled for 2020.

“Due to the unprecedented times we are living in related to COVID 19 and the recent tragic loss of our golf chair, Brook (Shafto), it has been determined that we will be unable to hold this year’s tournament,” said a news release from Jennifer White, director of the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation.

Shafto died May 25 at age 66.

In the past 30 years it has been running, the tournament has raised more than $3 million for the hospital, including between $150,000 and $200,000 in each of the past few years.

“2020 has brought unprecedented financial and personal challenges for many, including sponsors, players and donors therefore the foundation board of directors felt it was prudent and necessary to cancel this year’s event,” said the release. “We are hoping with your support to consider a memorial tournament recognizing both Brook Shafto and Harold Shantz in 2021.”

Donations are still being accepted for the Year of the Cat 2.0 fundraising, working towards purchasing a CT scanner for NGH.
