The Holiday Soup Luncheon fundraiser, which distributes its funds across the Norfolk County food banks, raised $8,090.55 in the two hours the doors were open at the Aud in Simcoe on Nov. 19.

“I’ve been coming to this event for a long time and this is the first time I’ve been able to volunteer as a councilor, so it’s very exciting,” said Norfolk County Coun. Kim Huffman. “It’s a great community event. We’re able to help the under-serviced population, it’s a great fundraiser, and a great community builder.”

“I have done this event since the very first one,” said Pond. “To me it’s a very important thing to do, it brings the community together, and it’s for a great cause. We raise a pile of money each year. It’s one of the events I love to do the most.”

Volunteers came out to serve soup, treats, and other snacks to those in attendance.

“I think it’s a worthwhile cause,” said volunteer and Norfolk County employee Linda Berke as she served treats provided by Courtland Bakery. “We do have a lot of folks in our area that do not have enough to eat and if through this soup luncheon they can accumulate enough money to divide it amongst our food banks then that’s a great thing.”

The event includes multiple local businesses coming together for a joint cause.

The annual event is sponsored by Norfolk County, Norfolk County Fair, and the Simcoe Reformer

“I think that it’s great to be involved with something that gives back to the community,” said Sue Downs, advertising manager at the Simcoe Reformer. “I appreciate that all of the restaurants come together for something that helps the community. They don’t worry about being side-by-side with one of their competitors.”
